Soaring Beyond: Ashley Gilbertson

MEET ASHLEY! She received a B.F.A. in Fashion Design this May.  She recently served as the Product Development Intern for Justin Brands  Inc.

We asked Ashley some questions, advice for current students, and how UNT helped her to succeed and SOAR BEYOND!

When you started at UNT, what were your plans after graduation? How have these plans changed (if at all)? When I first started, I wanted to pursue a career with costuming in the film industry, but as I continued with my program, I discovered I had an affinity for product development and technical design. My plans have changed to where I now am furthering my educational career by pursuing a Master of Science in Merchandising to help make me a more competitive candidate for the product development field.

What advice do you have for prospective or current students as they decide what they want their next steps to be (internships/careers/etc.)?Do what makes you happy and be honest with yourself. If ever in doubt ask yourself, “am I happy?” If you are, great! If not, do not be afraid to be true to yourself and change your goals/situation so that you can attain happiness.

How did you find your current role? Our fashion program has a blog where we can find job postings, competitions, and other information about the industry, and that is where I found the listing for my current role.

What was the toughest interview question they asked you? “Tell me about yourself?” This is such an open-ended question that I never know where to start. There also “what do you know about our company?” This question always feels like a surprise pop-quiz, even though it is a question I have been asked at almost every interview.

How did the Career Center help you? By being there! The Career Center has always been a great resource to have, especially if you get stuck with job searches and aren’t sure where to go next.
