Soaring Beyond: Filimon Gebrekidan

MEET FILIMON! He graduated in May 2020 with his degree in Computer Science.  He is currently working for Infosys as an Associate Software Engineer.

We asked Filimon some questions, advice for current students, and how UNT helped him to succeed and SOAR BEYOND!

When you started at UNT, what were your plans after graduation? How have these plans changed (if at all)? When I started UNT I wanted to be a software engineer for the FBI. I would say I chose the FBI because I used to watch criminal minds a lot. My goals really haven’t changed, while I don’t really have a specific place I want to work at, I still want to be a software engineer.

What advice do you have for prospective or current students as they decide what they want their next steps to be? My main advice would be to try your best to get an internship. In my case, I wanted to graduate on time, so I wasn’t focused on getting internships. I later realized getting a job would be hard without any experience, so I decided to devote my time to do as many projects as I could and getting as many certifications that were possible.

How did your program at UNT help you to feel prepared for this role? I would say besides the programming languages I was taught,  it would have to be to work well with people. Throughout my four years at UNT, I was involved in many group projects, I believe that has helped me to work well with my coworkers and to understand them better.

How did you find your current role? I found my current role at a UNT job fair. I spoke to the recruiter and she gave me her business card. I followed up and she gave me more information about the role. She even helped me prepare for the interviews.

What was the toughest interview question they asked you? The programming part of the interview was not as bad as I thought. The questions such as “How would you handle this situation” or “Tell me times when a problem occurred and what you did to fix the issue” were the ones I had to really think about.

How did the Career Center help you? The Career Center helped me create the resume that I showed my recruiter at the event.
