Jeanette Hickl (she, her, hers) – Senior Associate Director, Marketing and Assessment

I am from Bristol, Virginia, and lived in Virginia for 32 years before moving to Texas. I studied Human Development as an undergraduate and attended Virginia Tech. I went on to pursue my master’s degree at Radford University in Counselor Education. I have worked in career services since 2003. I started as a front desk assistant and have worked my way up through the years. I am the Senior Associate Director, and I oversee the marketing and assessment efforts of our office. Fun fact: I watch Days of our Lives every day. I don’t watch it because it is my favorite show, though. I watch it to celebrate the 19 years I had with my mom before she passed. We used to watch it together, and continuing to do so makes me smile.

Describe a typical workday, tasks, and what you enjoy most about your job?

As many will attest, there is no typical day in any, and mine is no different. My day can consist of one-on-one/group meetings with my team as well as posting on social media, tracking monthly numbers, and learning new skills to enhance my skills in this role.

Describe the services you provide for UNT students.

In my role, I don’t work with students directly, but I do support our marketing efforts through a new campaign called Soaring Beyond. Soaring Beyond celebrates the UNT student and alumni success stories from getting an interview to getting into graduate school. We would love for you to share yours! Submit your story here: http://tiny.cc/SoaringBeyond. Also, I support internship specialists in our office. We have worked together to create an internship cord campaign, an unpaid internship stipend opportunity, a series of college-specific blogs related to micro-internships, and a college-specific and central resource for all things internships.

Why do you believe students utilize the career center? What are the benefits?

I think students and alumni utilize the career center because they have been referred to us by a guardian, faculty/staff member, or fellow students as the place to work on your resume and find jobs. The great thing about those referrals is that our office does help with those needs and so much more. We can help you find an on-campus job, internship, or full-time job. We can help you with your applications for scholarships, grants, or graduate/professional school. We can get you set up with business cards, headshots, and professional clothing. We can help you perfect your cover letter, resume, and interview skills. We connect with an employer through informational interviews, job shadowing, mentoring, on-campus interviewing, networking events, and careers fairs. Even better, it is all FREE!
