Daisy Gillam (she, her, hers) – Assistant Director – Events

My name is Daisy–I use she, her, hers pronouns and am the Assistant Director of Events at the Career Center. I attended UNT as a student, though I didn’t graduate from UNT, and have just begun my Master’s program in Organizational Leadership. I love my job, including the stress and chaos of career fairs. Making an organized event out of chaos and a thousand moving parts is such an accomplished feeling! Additionally, I get to help students and employers make great connections, so even if career fair days are tiring, they’re rewarding at every level. For some fun facts about me: I spend a LOT of my time in Excel and will take any excuse to make a spreadsheet; I love trivia; I am a crochet and crafting addict; I love keeping plants but kill most of them; I love everything tacky; Oxford commas for life; night owl; terrified of escalators, heights, and opening biscuit cans.

Describe a typical workday, tasks, and what you enjoy most about your job?

A typical workday is never the same. I try to make to-do lists every day before work to spend the morning working through tasks with focus. I’m not a morning person at all, so having the guidance is helpful. These tasks can include benchmarking, working through a massive to-do list for all the career fairs, and working with our student & graduate assistants. Afterward, I can check emails and see what the day has in store, for me, including tackling larger tasks. More often than not, something comes up to derail this system, but I love it! In general, I love the chaos of my job. No day is ever the same, and I can never predict what’s going to happen! The basic idea of my job is to host great career fairs. Within the scope of that task, there’s so much room for creativity and pushing the boundaries! Transitioning to a virtual world due to COVID was a quick pivot for myself and our team, and we rose to the challenge and have used the time to make improvements to the virtual fairs and fairs we’ll offer in the future.

Describe the services you provide for UNT students.

I offer and host our career fairs and some of our other smaller events. At the moment, I’m also overseeing our interviewing suites, which students and employers can use. If you have any questions about career fairs or need a quiet room for a virtual interview, please let me know!

Why do you believe students utilize the career center? What are the benefits?

Students can always use the Career Center more! I love talking with students because, really and truly, I do my job for them. All of our staff are happy to take the extra time to ensure a student will be the most successful with any process.
