Fall 2021 Internship Program (August 30, 2021 – December 10, 2021)
Overview
Rooted in the guiding principles of President George W. Bush and Mrs. Laura Bush, the George W. Bush Presidential Center engages communities in the United States and around the world by developing leaders, fostering policy, and taking action to save and change lives. The Bush Center is home to the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum, which is operated by the National Archives and Records Administration, and the George W. Bush Institute, the non-partisan, public-policy arm of the Bush Center. The Bush Center is located on the campus of SMU in Dallas, Texas, and also includes a 15-acre park, a full-service restaurant, Café 43, and a museum store.
Housed within the George W. Bush Presidential Center, the George W. Bush Institute is an action-oriented, nonpartisan policy organization with the mission of cultivating leaders, fostering policies to solve today’s most pressing challenges and taking action to save and change lives. The work of the Bush Institute is inspired by the principles that guided the Bushes in public life: education is the foundation of a successful life; freedom is a universal human desire; free enterprise is the engine of economic prosperity; and every human life is precious.
Objectives
The George W. Bush Presidential Center is seeking professional, dependable, enthusiastic students for unpaid internships for the 2021 fall semester. The objectives of the internships are to provide undergraduate students with opportunities to:
- Engage in substantive projects and tasks that augment their in-classroom studies;
- Develop meaningful relationships that will enhance their professional development and future opportunities; and
- Gain broad exposure to the ongoing work of President and Mrs. Bush and the Bush Center.
Projects undertaken during the internship may be eligible for academic credit based on individual agreements established between interns and faculty members.
Focus areas
Internship duties may include work in the below areas. Projects/tasks may involve research, drafting documents/correspondence, event support, hosting guests, preparation for and participation in meetings, and general office/administrative support.
BUSH CENTER
Accounting
Oversees all accounting, financial reporting, and investments/endowments.
Development/Donor Relations
Consisting of donor-relations and development operations, this area is responsible for solicitation and processing of financial gifts.
Executive
Consisting of high-level, senior administrative management, the executive area touches all aspects of the Bush Center, the Bush Institute, and certain activities of President and Mrs. Bush.
External Affairs
External Affairs supports all aspects of marketing and communications in the Bush Center.
Event Planning
Responsible for the execution of all events for the Bush Center and Institute to advance fundraising objectives.
Human Resources
Human Resources is responsible for managing the operations, services, policies, and compliance of the human resources function.
Information Technology
This area oversees all day-to-day IT related functions, including technology/system set-up and troubleshooting as well as assisting with audiovisual management.
Operations
The Operations team is responsible for aiding in the management of the day to day operational functions of the organization including, but not limited to facilities, database operations, broadcast, and other general operations.
BUSH INSTITUTE
Economic Growth
This area aims advocate free market polices to strengthen economic integration between the United States, Canada and Mexico to bolster U.S. competitiveness in the global economy.
Education Reform
Education Reform works to increase student achievement through accountability and school leadership.
Evaluation and Research
Evaluation and Research partners with each program in the Bush Institute to measure and evaluate strategies, policies, tools and procedures for the Institute. This department also manages all day-to-day research activities for the Institute.
Global Health
Go Further is an innovative partnership that leverages public and private investments with the goal of significantly reducing cervical cancer deaths among HIV-positive women in Sub-Saharan Africa within a generation.
Human Freedom
Human Freedom aims to advance freedom by developing leaders in emerging democracies, standing with those who still live under tyranny and by fostering U.S. leadership through policy and action.
Military Service
This initiative empowers multiple sectors and populations to effectively support post-9/11 service members, veterans and their families in the areas of jobs, wellness, family, education, housing and women’s veteran issues. Products of this initiative include the W100K, a 100-kilomer mountain bike ride, and the Warrior Open, a competitive 36-hole golf tournament.
Leadership Programs
This initiative supports the logistics and content of each of our leadership programs that are operated by the Bush Institute including: WE Lead, Liberty and Leadership Program, Veteran Leadership Program and Presidential Leadership Scholars.
Women’s Initiative
With programs such as WE Lead; Afghan Women’s Project; and the First Ladies Initiative, this initiative works to improve access to education, health care, and economic opportunity for women and children.
Eligibility
- Juniors or seniors preferred.
- GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Available to work a minimum of 12 hours per week (preferably in 3-4 hour blocks of time).
- Subject to necessary background checks and willing to sign a confidentiality and non-disclosure agreement.
