The HSCC Peer Mentor position is housed within the UNT Career Center located in Sage Hall, Suite 280. Interested candidates should read the following information carefully before applying.
Qualifications
- Must be a current UNT student who will be enrolled for the Fall 2025 – Spring 2026 semesters
- Undergraduate students only (Freshmen – Seniors)
- 2.75 GPA or Higher
- Must have significant blocks of open times on your class schedule Monday through Friday between 9 am – 3 pm to accommodate school visits.
- This position involves driving to and from schools in the Denton area on a weekly basis. Candidates must have reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license. Public Transportation, Uber, or Lyft will not be allowed.
Purpose
The purpose of this role is to provide post-secondary guidance to local students in grades 6 – 12. This is done primarily through 1:1 mentoring in the schools, virtually and through class presentations. As a High School Career Connect Peer Mentor, not only will you work with middle and high school students, but you may also work with parents, counselors, teachers and/or school administrators. You will be assigned specific schools within Denton County and will spend most of your time there, however, there are opportunities for you to earn additional hours by completing projects in the office.
Job Responsibilities
- Provides mentoring to students at partner Middle and High Schools in the Denton and surrounding areas
- Facilitates presentations at schools and attends career and college fairs as requested
- May conduct virtual mentoring as needed
- Tracks and records student data to support department assessment needs
- Assists with the recruitment of new Mentors in Spring
- Support UNT Career Center events and initiatives as needed. This includes tabling, event check-in, drop-in resume review assistance and more.
- Attends weekly Team Meetings and participates in professional development trainings
Skills & Abilities
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Positive attitude and enthusiasm for educating and mentoring others
- A willingness to learn and be challenged
- Ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively
- Self-starter with the ability to manage time, tasks and meet deadlines
- Some knowledge of career readiness topics is preferred
- Comfortability delivering presentations and speaking to large audiences
- Fluency in verbal and written Spanish is preferred
Hours and Pay
- Mentors will be paid $10.00 per hour for up to 15 hours/week.
- The employment term for this position is for September 2025 – May 2026. Hours during Fall, Winter and Spring Break cannot be guaranteed.
- Reimbursement for mileage to and from schools ($0.67/mile, paid twice per semester)

College Work Study
You must have received and accepted a college work study award to be eligible for college work study. Work Study is not required for this position.
