Sarah Spath (she/her/hers) – Internship Specialist
I am originally from the beautiful, cold state of Michigan and attended the University of Michigan for my Bachelor of Business Administration and Masters in Accounting. After 4 years in corporate finance and 1 year in human resources, I leaped higher education. I graduated with my Master of Education in Higher Education from UNT and am now working as an internship specialist in the career center.
Describe a typical workday, tasks, and what you enjoy most about your job?
A typical workday includes a combination of various activities. I utilize our Handshake platform to review and report on internship experiences submitted by students. I also work with faculty members and companies to support internship courses and present on career-related topics. Other times I am collaborating with team members from the Career Center to find innovative ways to engage with students and be a supportive resource. The most fulfilling parts of my job are when I feel that I’ve made a positive impact on someone’s life, even if it is small. Additionally, learning from others, especially students, and thinking about how to do things differently is incredibly motivating for me.
Describe the services you provide for UNT students.
I meet regularly with students individually, in groups, and through classes to help in understanding the various components of the internship process. This includes understanding what internships are and why they are important, identifying ways to find and solidify an internship, preparing for internships, and reflecting on internship experiences. Specifically, this can look like reviewing resumes, discussing job search strategies, teaching about networking, conducting mock interviews, and more! I also support students in thinking through and pursuing their academic and professional goals, whether that be deciding on a major, identifying potential career paths, or translating experiences into skills.
Why do you believe students utilize the Career Center? What are the benefits?
I believe students use the career center to provide guidance when they are unsure of how to move forward in pursuing their goals. The career center has so many people and resources with a variety of backgrounds and experiences available to support students in understanding themselves better, possible career paths of interest, and how to connect those and progress towards the desired future. We are also here to connect students not only to themselves and their goals but also to other people they can relate to and learn from. The career center provides students with additional knowledge, development, and opportunities to support them in reaching their goals.
